Walter started working at Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio in 1960. Walter and Betty Lou started production in 1964 on the local children's Saturday morning show on television called Bum Bum and His Buddies that they self-funded. They also founded the six-year Actors and Writers Workshop later in the year. Lelisa Billingsley, also known as Lisa, was born in 1965. Julia Billingsley followed in 1967.
